If your AMD Ryzen PC has constant stuttering (and even choppy audio), it's almost never the drivers — it's the fTPM and an outdated BIOS. Here's how I fixed it.
The problem: stuttering across the ENTIRE PC, not just in games
In my case the stutter wasn't just in games — the entire PC was stuttering, whether I was gaming or just doing anything else. One moment everything runs smooth, then suddenly it all locks up, and on top of that the audio was messed up too, even on calls. That's the key tell: if the stutter hits the WHOLE system (audio included), it's almost never the game or your GPU — something deeper is going on.
Why it happens: fTPM and an outdated BIOS
AMD Ryzen processors have a firmware-based security chip called the fTPM (the TPM Windows 11 requires). The problem: on older BIOS versions, every time the fTPM accessed its memory it caused micro-stutters across the entire system — those periodic hitches and the choppy audio. AMD acknowledged this and fixed it in newer BIOS versions (what's called AGESA). That's why the fix isn't in Windows or your drivers — it's in the motherboard.
Before you go crazy: I tried everything and none of it was the fix
Telling you from experience so you don't waste time like I did: I tried everything. Drivers, reinstalling Windows, even other operating systems, a hundred "optimizations" and messing with BIOS settings… and nothing worked. If you've already been through the usual suspects and the stutter's still there system-wide, stop shooting in the dark and go straight to the BIOS.
The actual fix: update your BIOS to the latest version
What fixed it for me was updating the motherboard BIOS to the latest version. Step by step and
, because this is one place you don't want to rush:
1. Identify the EXACT model of your motherboard (brand, specific model, and revision if it has one). This is critical — a BIOS for the wrong model can brick your board. 2. Download the latest BIOS ONLY from the official website of your board's manufacturer (ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte…). Never from anywhere else. 3. Flash it using the board's own built-in tool (on ASUS it's EZ Flash; many boards also have USB BIOS Flashback, which lets you flash from a USB drive). I did it via the BIOS flash with the latest update. 4. Do NOT cut power during the process. If it shuts off mid-flash, you're in real trouble. A laptop with battery or a UPS if you have one is ideal. 5. Once it's done and you reboot, the stutter is gone. In my case it was immediate.
If something goes wrong: reset the BIOS
Don't panic — this isn't Russian roulette. In my case no issues at all, because my ASUS board has a backup system in case the flash fails. But if something does go wrong, the escape hatch is resetting the BIOS (Clear CMOS):
Many boards have a dedicated Clear CMOS button (on the rear I/O or on the board itself).
On others you remove the CMOS battery for a few seconds.
Or you use the Clear CMOS jumper/pins (check your board's manual).
That resets the BIOS to factory defaults and you're back in business.
fTPM: you don't need to disable it (if you update)
Some people "fix" the stutter by disabling the fTPM. Works as a band-aid, but you lose the TPM Windows 11 requires. I went the other way: updated the BIOS and kept fTPM 2.0 enabled — the new BIOS kills the stutter, so you get both: no stutter and TPM still active. Disabling it should only be a last resort if your board doesn't have a newer BIOS available.
What NOT to do (skip the snake oil)
So you don't fall into the same traps I did:
Don't reinstall Windows over and over hoping it fixes itself — if it's the fTPM, it won't go away.
No "magic optimizer" tools and no weird registry tweaks or HPET hacks. They won't fix this (and can make things worse).
Don't go fumbling around in the BIOS randomly changing settings — what fixes it is updating it, not blindly tweaking values.
